Dear Translator,

If you are completely happy in your profession and have never suffered from feelings of stress, burn-out, isolation, money-worries or boredom then I'm prepared to wager that you have been in this business for less than 10 years. And if you've never suffered from tingling hands or muscle twinges that make you fear repetitive strain injury, then all I can say is you're very fortunate - or you don't have a heavy workload!

Although extremely fulfilling at times, a translator's lot is not always a happy one. You're not in a position to conjure up commissions at will, you are totally reliant on the work cycles of your clients, which often leads to a feast or famine situation. How often have you had more work than you could cope with just before a long-awaited break? Only to return, bright-eyed,  bushy-tailed and ready for action, to discover that no work awaits you?

Yes, on paper you are your own boss, the master of your own destiny - but are you really? Are you afraid to take time off because you can guarantee you'll miss the chance of a lucrative contract the moment your back's turned? Every time you complete a piece of work, do you worry if you don't have another job lined up, leaving you in financial difficulties for the remainder of the month? Do you sometimes accept commissions on subjects that you don't really understand but you're afraid to say "no" because you need the money? Do you sometimes feel as though there's smoke coming out of your ears and your brain is about to explode?

I'm sure you can relate to some, if not all of the above. It more or less sums up where I was at after 18 years in the business as a German-English translator. I was working for two prestigious clients, Deutsche Messe AG, the world's biggest trade fair company, and the NKL, the North German State Lottery.

Although I was making a very good living, as a single woman of 52, with retirement, while not exactly on the immediate horizon, an increasingly important consideration, it became clear to me that if I wanted to live out my old age in any kind of comfort, I was either going to have to continue working indefinitely or amass a sizeable retirement fund.

As you know, the downside of any type of freelance profession is that every hour you're not working, is an hour in which you're not getting paid. So there's always going to be a ceiling on your potential earnings because there are only so many hours in the day.

I imagine you're like me and it's never occurred to you that you could do anything else. Even with its obvious pitfalls, working from home as a translator is infinitely preferably to office life, and most of us aren't qualified to do anything else.

But what if there was an alternative? An alternative that provides you with not only limitless earning potential but also freedom from the dreaded deadline stress?

As a freelancer it goes without saying that you have some knowledge of marketing. Without putting yourself out in the marketplace you wouldn't have a single client. Without marketing  no one would know about you and what you have to offer.

So even without knowing you I can categorically state that you have a huge advantage over the majority of Internet users. You have professional credibility and the ability to market your services. You have, perhaps without even realising it, all the skills you need to earn an income beyond anything you have ever envisaged.

How can I be so certain? Because that is exactly the position in which I currently find myself. In 2007, quite by chance, I discovered a business opportunity with an online marketing company. Less than 3 months later I submitted my final translation and became a full-time Internet entrepreneur.

Considering I had not been actively seeking a new career at the time, this was a completely unexpected turn of events, both for me and my clients!

But with a business model so powerful that I had earned in 3 months as much as in the previous 9 months as a translator, it was an easy decision, a "no-brainer" as they might say in less illustrious circles than ours.

And that's why I'm putting the same opportunity in front of you now, as a fellow translator.
